I don't believe

Personally I’m a big fan of the Santa Clause myth. At an early age it’s hard to imagine that your parents can be wrong let alone intentionally mislead you. Learning the fact that Santa Clause doesn’t exist is an important part of developing an awareness that authority figures lie and their lies are almost always self serving.

The loss of Santa Clause is important because it destroys magical thinking. You may find it cute that when your child wishes upon a star, but you don’t want them to be vulnerable to manipulation.

Now granted that isn’t why most parents teach their kids about Santa Clause, I tend to hear from them that it would be cruel not to include them. Also if your kid knows that Santa doesn’t exist they will likely tell their friends which will often get other parents angry with you.

I don’t mean for everyone to be cynical, I believe the world is awesome and I’m proud to be a human, but I’m glad to live in this era where there are less deaths due to murder and war than ever before (relative to population size). I’m glad to live in an era where people have more power than ever before, through education and democracy. I’m glad to live in an era where the Catholic church had to concede that the Big Bang and evolution are how we’re here.

And you know this only happens when people stop listening to people who grow in power through the fear of hell, stop killing each other over who has the best imaginary friend.

I know it still happens, but it’s not as bad as it used to be, you can thank your ancestors for that.
